24 Years since the fall of Sokhumi

Zurab Pataradze, Chairman of Ajara AR Government, George Ermakov, Mayor of Batumi and David Gabaidze, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ajara attended the event dedicated to the fall of Sokhumi. Officials laid wreath at the memorial of Zhiuli Shartava, the national hero who died for Georgia's territorial integrity.

The event was attended by representatives of the Veterans Union of Abkhazia. In connection with the date, families of victims and victims of the war in Abkhazia were given 300 GEL one-time material assistance within the program of the City Hall.

September 27 is one of the most tragic day in the new history of Georgia. Sokhumi fell on September 27, 1993. Military confrontation began in Abkhazia on August 14, 1992. The conflict between Georgian government troops and Abkhazian separatist forces lasted 13 months and 13 days.

More than 10 thousand Georgian soldiers and peaceful citizens died. 300 thousand IDPs from Abkhazia remained homeless. On the fall of Sokhumi Russian occupants and Abkhaz separatists shot Zhiuli Shartava, chairman of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, together with up to 30 Georgians.
